San Francisco has been named the best city in the world for LGBTQ+ life, per the newly released 2026 Sexually Liberal City Index — and if you've ever spent any time there, you don't need the data to believe it.

I lived there for a stretch, and there's no feeling like it. There was a tension that was just, lifted. And the parties didn't stop, even during lockdown (don't ask how I know).

But here's the gut punch: on the index's overall ranking — which also weighs legal protections — San Francisco was the only American city that cracked the top 10. Everyone else dropped off.

The report didn't dance around why, noting American cities are "fighting under the current administration.” That's the real headline. Queer culture in the U.S. isn't dying — it's thriving, in spite of a federal government working against it.

The cities that actually top the overall index don't have to fight their own government just to hold onto their protections.
