Two of the Castro's best-known gay bars just yanked controversial AI face scanners off their doors — about two months after a local reporter found them there.

Badlands and Toad Hall pulled the plug on Patronscan Guard+, the ID-scanning facial recognition system they'd installed at the door, after a petition calling on gay bars nationwide to stop using the tech and delete their databases passed 2,000 signatures.

The machine scans your license, takes a live photo, and logs your zip code, birth date, gender, and ID expiration date. 

Anti-surveillance organizers behind the tracker-tracking website Club 1984 argued the system leaves patrons' data exposed and guts the historic role of queer bars as the one place you wouldn't be "photographed, named, and listed." 

You can't opt out at the door. Your only recourse is a deletion request form on the company's website, after the fact.

Patronscan's maker disputes the framing — they say Guard+ isn't facial recognition, doesn't collect biometric data, and that California photos are deleted after 21 days. Fine.

The community didn't buy it, and honestly, in 2026, why would they? Nobody cares about the vendor's intentions. They're worried about who subpoenas the database.

Evan Greer, the director of Fight for the Future, a nonprofit that advocates against AI and surveillance, put it plainly: AI surveillance tech is creepy for anyone at a club, and outright dangerous for a community currently under attack.

The fight isn't over. Club 1984 has a list of gay bars still running the tech, while some others have signed a pledge never to use it. 

Nationally, the group is tracking close to 40 LGBTQ+ venues in cities like New York and LA using similar systems.
